CHERAS, 21 Nov – Researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) developed the FITRAH Box: Future Policing System technology to help prevent criminal cases through early detection using the Upcoming Generation Digital Video (DVR) recorders that employ artificial intelligence technology to address criminal problems.

The FITRAH Box uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology and works to prevent individuals from committing crimes, and it is equipped with human identification and criminal activity identification technology as well as strategy-generation technology to outsmart perpetrators.

Head researcher, Dr. Azree Nazri from the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FSKTM) said the ‘FITRAH Box’ acts to prevent individuals from committing crimes by providing surveillance for 24hours/7days through CCTV connected to the FITRAH box to monitor home and premises.

“Images from the CCTV will be analysed in real-time to identify crimes and information as well as warnings will be sent to home or premise owners two minutes earlier than the WhatsApp or Telegram application to prevent the crime from happening,” he said.

He asserted that the technology was developed due to the lack of local technology and products to meet the wants and needs of the national market.

“Most high-tech artificial intelligence technologies are from the United States and China that can pose safety issues that are rarely looked into. Most companies in Malaysia are using artificial intelligence technology without thinking of their effects. For example, the facial recognition system used abroad has secretly incorporated faces of agents of those countries,” he said.

According to him, the advantage of the FITRAH Box is that it is able to distinguish criminal activities without human assistance, and it is able to make independent decisions and actions to prevent the perpetrator from doing the criminal act without human assistance.

“In addition to its low cost, the FITRAH Box also tracks criminal activities fast and acts to control crime and prevent perpetrator from continuing criminal activities,” he said.

The technology that has been developed since 2016 is targeted at users who require a monitoring system such as domestic operators, retailers and small as well as medium businesses.

The FITRAH Box technology is ready to be commercialised. It is already being used at the Bandar Tun Hussein Onn Mosque, Cheras for the purpose of a full-trial. - UPM
